Boat Overview

MARA, formerly known as ARCADIA, is hull number 8 of a total of 9 Able Apogees constructed by the renowned Able Marine in Maine. The company was later sold to Morris, which continued to produce this highly regarded blue water performance cruiser as the Morris 51.

MARA is specifically designed for long-distance passage making, emphasizing both ocean-going comfort and performance. With a draft of only 6’, she is capable of cruising most parts of the world. MARA is equipped for short-handed sailing, with most running rigging led to the cockpit. Features such as a powerful autopilot, electric primary and main halyard winches, uncluttered decks, roller furling for both the headsail and staysail make MARA easy to sail. Completing 200 mile plus days under sail should be a common experience.

Below decks, MARA offers 3 generous sleeping cabins with sea bunks aft, a proper “U” shaped sea galley, a large navigation station, a walk-in engine space, and handrails throughout. For safety at sea, no single space below deck is overly large, yet all cabins remain comfortable.

For a “go anywhere, do anything” boat, consider adding MARA to your list of must-see vessels.

Hull

The FRP hull is hand laminated in one piece using a single-element female mold.

Materials include a combination of non-woven biaxial glass, unidirectional roving, and Kevlar reinforcement in particularly stressed areas such as the forward position of the hull and the turn of the bilge at mid-keel.

The core consists of Baltek one-inch CK-100 end-grain balsa below the waterline and CK-57 between the waterline and the sheer.

Notably, hull core is omitted in all areas of thru-hull penetration in lieu of solid glass.

Resin throughout the hull is 100-percent vinylester.

A system of stringers and structural floors is glassed in immediately after the last layer of laminate to ensure a strong primary bond.

Additionally, all major bulkheads are bonded to the hull and deck, with Airex foam fillets to optimize cohesion.

Deck

The hull-deck joint is accomplished by means of a double inward flange, an anodized and perforated aluminum toe rail, thru-bolts, and 3M-5200 sealant/adhesive.

The deck itself utilizes polyester resin and is cored with one-inch Baltek end-grain balsa except where solid glass is built up in areas of hardware attachment.

Deck fittings are thru-bolted and carried by G-10 backing plates.

Each chain plate is engineered to carry more than the entire weight of the boat at any given time.
