Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.5 History
Late autumn 1980, finally the moment had arrived, and the aluminum V6 engine designed by Giuseppe Busso found its way into the Giugiaro body of the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV. An excellent combination—the stunningly beautiful body with the extremely low windshield and the excellent chassis—made the Alfetta GTV desirable and successful at a young age. Now, with the magnificent engine, it received a knight's accolade, and the GTV 6 2.5 became a very serious competitor on race tracks. A series victory in the European Touring Car Championship between 1981 and 1985 followed, along with numerous other wins, proving that this Alfa Romeo, alongside the Tipo 33, Giulia Sprint GTA, Tipo 159 Alfetta, Tipo 158, 6C 1750, 6C 2300, 8C 2300, P2, and P3, is among the most successful racing models. Additionally, James Bond drove a GTV 6 2.5 in the 1983 film "Octopussy"!
In the production version for the ambitious sports driver, many interesting technical highlights were already present at the start of production, such as: safety passenger cell with an extremely stiff B-pillar, transaxle with the engine at the front and clutch and gearbox at the rear (perfect weight distribution 50% front, 50% rear), 4 brake discs, with ventilated discs inside at the front and mounted on the differential at the rear to reduce unsprung mass. The rear axle with drive follows the De Dion principle and is thus very advanced. 15-inch alloy wheels are standard.
Another highlight is the magnificent aluminum V6 with its 2.5 liters of displacement and a glorious sound spectrum at both low and high revs.Cylinder banks are satisfied with an overhead camshaft per bank, with the intake valves directly operated by rocker arms, and short rocker arms are also used for the exhaust valves. This engine, with its 160 HP at 5,600 RPM, is undoubtedly one of the best V6 engines ever built, and it already made the vehicle reach 220 km/h in its time. The sprint to 100 km/h is completed in 8 seconds.
