Arctic Vixen is designed by renowned naval architect TED BREWER. This aluminum version of his Arden class has also been built in fiberglass and steel. According to Steve Dashew in his book “Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia,” she is “a go anywhere, do anything, bullet proof cruising yacht.” Arctic Vixen lives up to this high praise. She has proven to be a fast, easily handled boat, even sailed by an elderly couple, with the owner being 82 years old.
The primary concerns in the construction and outfitting of the boat have been safety, reliability, and simplicity. Arctic Vixen is a sailor’s boat ready to go anywhere in the world. The beautiful interior features mahogany walls and other exotic woods, contrasting with the functional exterior. The boat boasts beautiful lines with its graceful sheer and modest overhangs.
Arctic Vixen carries a generous sail area, including:
All sails are controlled from the cockpit. Additional sails include:
A spinnaker and a second serviceable jib are stored in a locker in Trinidad.
Reefing is simple due to the in-boom furling, which is superior to in-mast furling. In winds above 25 knots, the owners usually sail with just the jib and the mizzen, cruising at 8 to 10 knots. In light winds of 8 knots, she will make 4 knots with the appropriate sail combination. Under power, she cruises at 6-7 knots at 2300 rpm and can reach 9 knots in calm conditions at 2700 rpm.
The primary anchor is a Bruce 110 pounds on 300 feet of oversized chain, operated by a Maxwell windlass. A second anchor is a Fortress FX-125 with 30 feet of chain and 300 feet of braided nylon rope. A third anchor, a Fortress FX-55, is located at the aft of the boat.
There are double cleats mid-ship for spring lines, and all dock lines are 1 inch braided nylon. The aft deck features 300 feet of ¾ inch braided nylon line on a reel.
Over the butterfly hatch midship is a frame for carrying a dinghy. The overbuilt davits allow the owners to carry a 10 foot 4 inch Highfield dinghy with the motor mounted on the davits. The dinghy and engine are included with the boat. The dinghy was new in January 2023, while the engine is 5 years old.
There are two deck lockers mid-ship built into the hard dogger, with the port-side locker holding propane tanks. A teak deck box near the main mast is for sail cover storage.
The aft deck includes an aluminum storage locker for outboard engine gasoline and oil. All flammables are stored above deck. A BBQ with shelves and a deck shower are also present.
Ladders built into the railings provide access for dinghy or swimming. There is also ladder access to the dinghy on the stern.
Below deck features a fore-peak chain locker in the bow with easy access. A half-height watertight bulkhead separates it from the forepeak cabin, which has been framed for two single berths but is intended for sail and rope storage. A full watertight bulkhead separates this cabin from the main cabins.
The main cabin contains 3 single berths, a hanging closet, a desk, and a wash basin. Ventilation is provided by a ceiling hatch, 4 port lights, and a dorade.
The saloon features generous seating and an exceptional table that seats 8. The port and starboard settees can be used as berths if necessary. A storage cabinet is located on the port side, with a bookcase and spirits locker on the starboard side. The head and shower are on the starboard side, followed by the galley.
The galley has ample storage, a near centerline double sink draining to a holding tank, a four burner Force 10 stove, a fridge below, and a microwave at eye level. The galley is conveniently located at the foot of the companionway stairs.
The owner's cabin features 3 large hanging closets, 10 good sized drawers, and two shoe boxes for ample storage. A small dressing area with an open hanging closet houses the water maker. The owner's head is adjacent to the dressing area, and ventilation is provided by an open deck hatch, 4 port lights, and a dorade.
The cockpit has a hard dogger with Diamond Seaglase tempered glass. It features a large table area for charts, a VHF mike, and power outlets. The chart plotter and AIS are on the starboard side. The cockpit comfortably seats 8 and includes 8 Andersen winches for quick sail adjustments.
A waterproof deck hatch opens to a lazaret for storing the drogue, emergency tiller, and dock lines. This lazaret also provides access to the quadrant and rudder post.
Arctic Vixen will be sold with everything necessary to simply “sail away.” This includes all kitchen equipment, bedding and towels, a complete set of instruction manuals, and small tools.
