1971 Stutz Duplex - one of only two known examples, built by Carrozzeria Padane
This 1971 Stutz Duplex is a true rarity in the world of collector cars. It is believed to be one of only two Stutz ever built, and the only known example manufactured by the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Padane. The Duplex was designed as a four-door version of the rugged Blackhawk coupe and was intended to offer the glamour of bespoke luxury in a dramatic, handcrafted package.
In 1968, the Stutz brand was revived by New York banker James O'Donnell and returned with a mission: to revive the opulence of the pre-war era.
With styling by legendary designer Virgil Exner, the new Stutz vehicles were more than just transportation—they were rolling sculptures built in Italy with American mechanics.
For the Duplex, a Pontiac Grand Prix chassis was shipped to Modena, where it was completely rebuilt by hand and transformed into a unique limousine.
The design is sleek: freestanding headlights, an upright grille, faux side pipes, open running boards, and a dramatic spare tire in the trunk define the distinctive silhouette.
Under the hood, a Cadillac platform and a Pontiac 400 V8 provide reliable and powerful performance. The result is a unmistakable blend of American muscle and European craftsmanship—a unique automotive statement.
History
This Duplex with chassis number 364856 is probably the only example that was factory-built in The car has been painted in chestnut brown. It is most likely the same vehicle that originally belonged to George Norman Jr., a millionaire from Salt Lake City.
In a spectacular twist of fate, Norman became a refugee in the 1970s and disappeared for 23 years after fleeing from tax violations.
Federal authorities seized his assets, including this car, a "1971 four-door burgundy Stutz," which was sold and eventually landed in Florida.
Over the years, the car was cosmetically modified, including a new white paint job and wire-spoke wheels.
More recently, it was restored to its original appearance, painted in deep black and equipped with the rare Kelsey-Hayes cast wheels, as used on early Blackhawks. The bodywork exhibits excellent fit and finish — exceptional for a low-volume production — with sharp panel lines, polished stainless steel trim, and satisfying door work.
The "Carrozzeria Padane" sill badge remains intact, highlighting Italian craftsmanship.
