Vehicle description (by seller)

Mercedes 220 A with special bodywork

The German company Wendler was founded in 1840 as a "carriage factory" initially producing carriages, and in this tradition, the talented designer Helmut Schwandner created custom bodies on supplied chassis for wealthy clients starting in the 1920s. Suppliers included Bayerische Motorenwerke, Brennabor, Bugatti, Horch, and Maybach. The most common construction method: wooden frame with aluminum panels. After the war, this continued for a while.

This 2-door, 4-seat convertible built on an A-Cabrio chassis was created with a wooden frame and aluminum panels. It features a curved Securit windshield with wipers, frameless Securit side windows, leather upholstery, and turn signals. The client for this custom-made vehicle—built only once as a convertible and twice as a coupe—was the mine owner Rudolf Schmöle from Iserlohn. After a long life in the company, the car was stored in a private museum for some time, but after the owner’s death, it had to close, and an expert in special bodywork took care of the automobile.

After a long automotive life, a complete restoration was necessary—this was executed excellently, and the car has been reliably in service again for 5 years. The restoration is documented on a comprehensive photo CD, and it has traveled 4,500 kilometers since then.

Ideal for an enthusiast of custom bodies and the refined lifestyle of the 1950s.
