As true automotive enthusiasts, we embarked on a search—not for the meaning of life, but for a BMW 1600 GT. The GT! That small grand tourer that looks as if Pietro Frua himself decided one Sunday morning to outwit the laws of automotive grace. Our European search yielded a dizzying total of three examples. Three! In words: three. A number just enough to organize a mediocre game of Skat, but certainly not enough to pretend there is a wide selection. Two of the candidates are in the high six-figure range. However, none of these handsome models tell a story like the one our offered example does. A history so complete that every TÜV inspector would be moved to tears. In October 1968—when the Beatles were still together and German drivers believed 120 km/h was 'more than enough'—BMW dealer Schmoldt & Axmann in Kiel registered the BMW 1600 GT with number 001156. A first registration, probably because they couldn’t wait to at least briefly see the car at their desk. On November 14, 1968, the coupé was delivered to Mrs. Barbara R., a lady with a good sense of style who traded in her slightly damaged Volkswagen. According to the purchase contract, and we have the original document, from then on, dear readers, begins what is known in specialist circles as the automotive stroke of luck: a complete history, as neatly organized as the cutlery drawer of a well-run large kitchen. Paper folder, invoices, TÜV reports, expert opinions—each page tells how this coupé was not just driven but cared for, cherished, and perhaps even occasionally stroked. Over the decades, the owner became somewhat of a local celebrity herself, for hiding such a sleek, Frua-designed coupé from the public would be a cultural crime. She shared her experiences in various magazines—delightful reading—small adventures from a time when cars still smelled, drove, and had character. You simply cannot imagine a better history for a full-blooded classic of this category. To ensure the next owner can continue this tradition, BMW Classic Partner REVO recently performed a major inspection, replaced all operating fluids, new cooling hoses, synchronized the carburetors (beautifully!), fitted new Pirellis, and more. It cost about 5,000 euros—money well spent on a car that was never about cost but always about passion.
