BMW 1600 GT

History

BMW took over the company Glas in 1966 and inherited fantastic Frua bodies commissioned by Hans Glas; used in the Glas 1300 and 1700 GT Coupé. Another Frua design was the large Glas V8 Coupé. BMW streamlined its Glas sales program at the time and, among other things, installed the legendary and rev-happy 1.6-liter BMW ti engine in the GT Coupés, equipped with 2 Solex double carburetors and good for 105 PS. Furthermore, the front axle was modified among other technical modifications, and space was also created for the legendary BMW kidney grille. This breathtaking body combined with this fiery engine is an exceptionally successful combination, as confirmed by professional journalists. The problem was only that BMW launched the 02 series at the same time, which competed with the 1600 GT. So, after about 1 year of production and approximately 1250 vehicles, production was unfortunately discontinued in August 1968.

The BMW 1600 GT offered here is verifiably second-hand. The original cardboard cover vehicle registration document is also available. This BMW was first delivered in August 1968 in silver metallic and was one of the last vehicles manufactured by BMW with the special Frua body. Over the years, this coupé was repainted by the first owner in its current color. According to the heirs, the original owner found the silver metallic too boring. A few years ago, this 1600 GT was sold by us to its second owner. Despite all the fascination, he simply couldn't get along with this sleek little car due to his over 2-meter height, and so we now have the opportunity for the second timeThis 1600 GT is being offered on the market. The engine is still original, the chassis and brakes are impeccable, and the bodywork and paintwork are free of complaints to this day. Currently fitted with a Takata sports steering wheel and contemporary aluminum wheels. The original steering wheel is included in the delivery. A touch of patina is naturally visible, but it adds to the extraordinary flair that surrounds this vehicle. Most BMW 1600 GTs are in private collector hands. In our opinion, this sports coupe should not be missing from any ambitious collection, true to the motto: "Joy of driving."
